The rod slides in guides and is thrown by means of a horizontal cross bar on the inside of the door and may be thrown by a handle, knob, lever, bar or key on the outside of the door. It may be equipped with a lock or latch; the two-piece rod may be locked in a retracted position to permit the door to be operated from inside or outside.
